Hi and Welcome - Woody Minor and Bob Farrar. Bob talks about his Marcuse & Remmel database project.
Introduction to Alameda - To get a sense of the neighborhood, let's go back 10,000 years, when this area was an oak filled peninsula. The original Spanish name for Alameda was Encinal, and then the Anglos named it Alameda, which means a tree lined boulevard. During the Gold Rush the land changed hands, from ranchero Antonio Maria Peralta to the partners Chipman and Aughinbaugh, who soon set about retailing it. Lots placed on the market brought a tenfold return on their investment.
After the Civil War, the advent of the railroads and associated ferry lines put into motion yet another transformation of the once rural peninsula into a thriving suburban city.
