Italianate - Built 1879 by Gilbert & Brown
Classic Italianate 2-story residence with hipped roof and rectangular massing. The highly ornate detailing surrounding the arched windows is characteristic of this style. Notice the corner block detail known as “quoins”, old French word meaning "corner" or "angle". These were applied to emulate the stone detailing found on Italian villas. A Queen Anne turret in the back was added later. Also look very closely at the shape of the front bays, which are actually 5-sided.
\* The quoin of a structure is often used as decoration, defining space by visually outlining the geometry of a building. Some are structural while other merely add aesthetic detail to a corner. According to a 19th century encyclopedia, these imply strength, permanence and expense, all reinforcing the onlooker's sense of a structure's presence.
