Row on the 1300 block of Pacific Avenue
Built in 1895
Architect: Marcuse & Remmel****
Builder: Marcuse & Remmel
1895 was the “year of change,” marking the beginning of Marcuse & Remmel’s transition from ornate Queen Anne to the more sedate Colonial Revival style. Ornamentation is compressed into frieze bands under eaves, panels and pediments. Decorations and detailing at this time tend to be classically inspired, such as round columns, pilasters and garlands. The hip, the gambrel and the steeply pitched gable are the prevalent roof forms. This row was almost lost when they built Littlejohn Park, but the houses were saved when it was determined by the city that they had historic value. This is one of Alameda's great architectural preservation stories!
