1897 Row at 1618, 1622, 1626 Sherman Street

Architect: Marcuse & Remmel****

Builder: Marcuse & Remmel

Cost: $2,150-$2,900

Commissioned by Samuel McHenry, these three houses combine Queen Anne and Colonial elements.

1618 has a gambrel dormer reminiscent of 1710 Sherman (also built for McHenry).

1622 Sherman is a more staid version of 1618 Sherman, with wavy shingles and an odd window panel in the gable. The tall porch appears to be totally intact, retaining the original balustrade and stairs.

1626 Sherman closely resembles its neighbor, 1622. The gable roof is rotated so the slope and dormer face the street, and the porch has high boxed posts with brackets. Porch and stairs have been rebuilt in concrete, with new balustrade. The garage beneath the porch is an early addition.

McHenry’s four-square house at the corner (1630) was also built in 1897, at a cost of $3,700.
